Fastener placement: screws should sit in the flat, driven straight, seated so the washer compresses evenly — not overdriven until the washer squeezes out, and not underdriven. Closures at ridge and eave, present and correctly oriented. Panels cut square with hemmed edges at valleys. Trim laps running with the water, not against it. Penetrations flashed with proper boots rather than sealed with a tube of caulk and hope.
It is the single failure we see most. A screw driven too hard crushes the rubber washer out from under the head, which leaves the hole effectively unsealed while looking perfectly fine from the ground. Multiply by several hundred fasteners and you have a roof that starts weeping in year three. A good installer uses a depth-set driver and checks. Ask yours what they use.
From the ground with binoculars: are the panel lines straight and parallel? Do the fastener rows line up, or do they wander? Is the ridge cap straight, with closures visible and no gaps at the ribs? At the eaves: is trim seated and level, with no lifted edges? Around penetrations: are there proper boots or is there visible caulk doing the work? Any of those failing is worth raising before the final payment, not after.
