Ask one question: do you roll your own panels? A manufacturer will name the plant and tell you the coil. A distributor will change the subject to service or price. Neither is dishonest — distributors serve a real purpose — but only one of them controls your lead time and can cut a panel to 27 feet 4 inches because that is what your roof measures.
It removes a margin layer, which usually shows in the number. But be careful comparing on price alone: a cheaper quote can also mean thinner gauge, stock lengths that force laps, or trim and fasteners left out. Ask every supplier for gauge, cut length, and what is included, then compare. Buying direct should win on that basis, not on a headline figure.
