Interior posts are where farm buildings fail their owners. You cannot back a trailer past them, you cannot stack round bales around them, and you lose usable floor to them forever. Our frames clear-span to 60' wide, which means a combine, a sprayer or a hay stack fits without designing around a column. This is the single biggest advantage of steel over a traditional pole barn.
Hay wants airflow — a roof and two ends is often better than a sealed box, because trapped moisture is what spoils bales. Equipment wants weather protection but rarely needs full enclosure. Livestock needs windbreak on the prevailing weather side and open on the other. We build all three, and we would rather talk through what you are actually storing than sell you more panels than you need.
Adding a lean-to to an existing structure costs meaningfully less per square foot than a standalone building of the same area, because it shares a wall and a foundation edge. If you are already close to your budget ceiling, extending with a lean-to usually gets you more covered space than shrinking the main structure would save.
Round bale storage depends on bale size and stacking height, but a common starting point is a 30'×40' open-sided structure with 14' legs, which lets you stack two high and drive in with a tractor. Airflow matters as much as square footage — a fully enclosed hay barn traps moisture and spoils bales from the inside.
For clear-span and longevity, yes. Steel framing spans wider without interior posts, does not rot at grade the way treated posts eventually do, and resists insects entirely. Pole barns can be cheaper on the initial quote for small spans. Over a 25-year horizon in a humid climate, steel usually wins.
Many counties in NC, SC and VA have agricultural exemptions that reduce or remove permitting for genuine farm-use structures — but the exemption varies significantly by county and often depends on your land's tax classification. Check with your county before you order. We supply certified drawings when they are needed.
Yes, and it is the most cost-effective way to expand. The main structure carries the lean-to's inner edge, so you are only paying for one new wall line. Tell us at order time if you expect to add one and we will plan the frame accordingly.
