The number one problem we solve on the phone is height. Manufacturers quote RV height at the roofline; your rooftop air conditioner adds a foot or more. Measure from the ground to the highest point on your unit, then add twelve inches of clearance. Most Class A coaches need 14' legs. If you are between sizes, go taller — you cannot add leg height after a building is installed.
A 14' tall open cover catches far more wind than a 6' carport, and the forces at the anchor points are correspondingly higher. This is where cheap covers fail. We size anchors to your soil and site exposure, and for coastal counties in NC, SC and VA we supply wind-rated certification. If someone quotes you a tall cover without asking about your site, that should worry you.
An open cover stops UV and hail — which is most of the damage — for the least money. Enclosing the sides adds security and keeps driving rain off, and matters if you store the unit through winter. A fully enclosed RV garage with a roll-up door costs considerably more but lets you work on the unit under cover. Plenty of customers start open and enclose later.
Measure ground to the top of your rooftop AC unit and add a foot. Most Class A motorhomes need 14' legs. Travel trailers and fifth wheels usually fit under 12'–13'. When in doubt, go one size taller — leg height cannot be changed after installation.
18' is functional; 20' lets you deploy the awning and walk around the unit comfortably. If you also park a truck alongside, look at 24'. Width is much cheaper to add at order time than to regret later.
Tall open structures take substantially more wind load than low carports, so anchoring and certification matter more here than on any other product we sell. We size anchors to your specific site and provide wind-rated engineering where your county requires it.
