They fail first and cost most to fix.
First, gauge — 31-gauge exists and is sometimes quoted against 29-gauge without mention. Second, cut length: stock lengths force horizontal laps you did not budget for, in labour or in leak risk. Third, trim — ridge cap, eave, rake and J-channel routinely appear as a separate quote later. Fourth, fasteners and closures, which are a meaningful line item and the easiest to omit. Ask about all four and most price gaps close.
Buying direct from the manufacturer removes distributor margin — that is real. Collecting rather than having it delivered saves freight on large orders. Choosing a standard colour over a premium pigment saves money for no performance difference. Sticking with 29-gauge where your purlin spacing does not demand 26 is sensible, not cheap. And a simple gable roof needs far less trim than a complicated one, so design choices matter.
Fasteners and closures. Every time. Cheap screws have washers that perish under UV and back out with thermal cycling; cheap foam closures compress permanently and stop sealing. Both fail years before the panel does, and both are expensive to fix because someone has to get on the roof. If you are trimming a budget, trim the colour and the gauge before you trim the screws.
29-gauge in a standard colour, collected rather than delivered, bought direct from a roll-former, on a simple gable roof that needs minimal trim. That is a genuinely lean roof. Anything cheaper than that usually means thinner gauge or items left off the quote.
Almost always one of four things: thinner gauge, stock lengths instead of cut-to-length, trim excluded, or fasteners and closures excluded. Ask both suppliers about all four and compare again — the gap usually collapses.
Buying efficiently is worth it. Buying under-specified is not. The parts worth economising on are colour and, where your framing allows, gauge. The parts never worth economising on are fasteners and closures, because they fail first and are the most expensive to put right.
