Most companies calling themselves manufacturers are dealers who order finished panels. That is a legitimate business, but it determines whether they control your lead time or inherit it, and whether they can cut a panel to your dimension or only sell stock lengths. The most common hidden difference between two building quotes is 14-gauge framing against 12-gauge. It is rarely made obvious, and it materially changes both price and structure. Ask for the number in writing. If the answer is vague or arrives as 'heavy-duty galvanized steel', that is your answer.
'Free delivery' with an unstated radius is a common way to make a number look lower. Ours is free within 100 miles of any of our 28 lots, and quoted openly beyond that. Also ask what site conditions void it — some companies charge extra for anything they decide is non-standard once they arrive.
A company with physical lots lets you walk through the size you are considering — you cannot judge a 12-foot leg height from a website. And when a warranty question arises in year four, a local company with premises answers differently than a national call centre. We have 28 lots across NC, SC and VA and two plants. There is no single answer, but there is a way to compare: ask whether they roll their own steel, what framing gauge is in the quote, whether installation is included and to what radius, whether you can view a building in person, and who you call in year four. Hold every company to the same five questions.
Normalise them first. Get framing gauge, panel gauge, roof style, anchor type, and what is included for delivery and installation from each supplier. Most apparent price gaps close once those five are equal. If one is still far cheaper, something is still missing.
Sometimes on the headline number, but compare what is included and who handles problems afterwards. National sellers typically have no premises in your state, which matters when you want to see a building before buying or need something resolved later.
